Live Well During Retirement in Cottleville

If you are looking for a setting that feels like home, with a charming ambiance filled with activity, engagement, fun, wellness, and more, consider retirement in Cottleville, Missouri. It might just check all the boxes on your list for an ideal lifestyle for this exciting chapter of life.

At Avalon Park, we want to share the good news of why so many forward-thinking older adults have chosen Cottleville for their retirement address. We think you’ll like what you hear—in fact, we think you’ll love it here!

Why is retirement in Cottleville an outstanding choice?

Located in the heart of St. Charles County, this lovely town is a great place to experience small-town ambiance, with all the benefits of urban life in nearby St. Louis (just 32 miles away). In fact, Cottleville has earned some high praise, including being named one of Niche’s “Best Places to Live in Missouri.”

The history of Cottleville dates back 225 years when Captain Warren Cottle settled in the area near the Missouri River and built a mill to serve settlers coming from the East. The town was laid out in 1839 and a post office opened in 1843. It’s still a wonderful mix of old and new, which makes retirement in Cottleville a great choice for older adults who enjoy exploring and learning.

For example, the historic downtown area, known as Old Town Cottleville, has been preserved through various streetscape projects and is home to businesses, stores, restaurants, churches, a post office and city hall, as well as 210 acres of parks.

Retirement in Cottleville: much to do, enjoy, and celebrate!

Here’s a few reasons why:

Destinations to delight the whole family

“Old Town” Cottleville offers a unique blend of shops, historic buildings, boutiques and restaurants. Frankie Martin’s Garden is an inviting destination located in the heart of Cottleville where you can socialize with friends, family, and neighbors. It’s a popular place to watch movies on the weekends with picnic tables, pergolas, and fire pits.

A unique and fanciful place to visit is the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House, which offers a rare and up-close look at more than 60 tropical butterfly species and more than 150 tropical plants in a beautiful garden setting. You can also take a class or attend an event. Children and grandchildren will love the Urban Air Trampoline and Adventure Park, for a “safe place to jump, soar, race, climb, and play.”

Or for a day of fun, head to Dickherber Farms, where the whole family can enjoy a petting zoo. Fall activities include a corn maze, hayrides, campfires, pumpkins, corn stalks, field trips, birthday parties, and a kids’ fort.

Festivals that bring everyone together

Celebrate the 4th of July in St. Charles at the Riverfest where visitors enjoy live music, a carnival, parade, live music, wonderful food and beverages, and of course fireworks to end the day. Travel back in time at the St. Louis Renaissance Festival in September and October for a variety of stage and street acts, an artisan marketplace, unusual games (like ax throwing!), jousting, juggling, pirates, fun foods, and tons of activities.

For arts and crafts lovers, the Festival of the Little Hills in St. Charles is the place to be in mid-August for a chance to see the work of more than 300 amazing artisans as well as entertainment and food, and admission is free!

Arts that inspire the creative spirit

Take in a live theater performance at the Shook Theatre at St. Charles Community College featuring a variety of plays as well as diverse musical offerings from jazz to chamber choirs to orchestras. And don’t miss the art gallery in the Donald D. Shook Fine Arts Building exhibiting the work of professional artists from the greater St. Louis region, creations from SCC art faculty and students, and developing artists in the community.

Another option for an aficionado of the arts is the J. Scheidegger Center for Fine Arts at Lindenwood University in St. Charles. Here, you can enjoy internationally known musicians, actors, and entertainers, as well as student performances and art exhibits.

Opportunities for building knowledge and sharing wisdom

Lifelong learning can make retirement a true adventure. It’s a great way to gain knowledge and share insights with others who have similar interests. Washington University in St. Louis is home to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute where members can take courses, join special interest groups and attend events and lectures. OLLI classes are not for credit; just enjoyment!
